The List of Best Sports Movies

This is the best time of the year for sports. College football, the NFL, baseball playoff’s - 3 or 4 nights a week there is one or more good sporting events to tune in to. In tribute to the best sports season, I have compiled a list of the 10 best sports movies.

  1. Bull Durham
The genius of Bull Durham is that it is a baseball movie that is not really about baseball (and minor league baseball at that), but about life, love, and all of the bullshit in between. Susan Sarandon gets the MVP, and Robert Wuhl is awesome in his small supporting role.
  2. Raging Bull
Maybe the best movie by arguably the best actor of all time. De Niro delivers a full on tour de force performance as Jake La Motta.
  3. Caddyshack
“This is a hybrid. This is a cross, ah, Bluegrass, Kentucky Bluegrass, Featherbed Bent, and Northern California Sensemilia.”
  4. Hoosiers
Okay this is the same formulaic sports movie that has been made over and over - so why does Hoosiers work? The continually underrated Gene Hackman. Hackman is simply awesome, Barbara Hershey is freakin gorgeous, and Dennis Hopper is Dennis Hopper.
  5. North Dallas Forty
I like this movie, in spite of this movie.
  6. Eight Men Out
I can’t believe this list only has 2 baseball movies…. This Blacksox movie is excellent even though Cusack is in it.
  7. Brian’s Song
Somebody once told me that this is the only movie that men can watch together and cry during… To be fair, it is pretty damn sad.
  8. Any Given Sunday
Even though this movie looks like it was edited by bingeing speed freaks, and is basically an updated, slicker North Dallas Forty, Oliver Stone ultimately delivers a fairly interesting football film.
  9. Hoop Dreams
If you wonder why this documentary makes the list, I would bet that you haven’t seen it.
  10. Slap Shot
Yea, it’s a hockey movie. But it is a wild, vulgar, 70’s Paul Newman hockey movie.

Why the New Star Wars Movies Suck

Tamara and I were watching Attack of the Clones the other night, and as my mind wandered ( I mean come on it was Attack of the Clones ) I figured out why the new star wars movies sucked - and it can be summed up in 3 words. No Han Solo.

Really, that spirit of whimsy and comic relief is no where to be found in the dry and serious second trilogy. Tamara suggested that maybe that is Jar-Jar was all about, and I have to admit that I have no idea what Lucas was thinking about when he decided to include that unholy computer generated creature, but if it was to try and add that touch of campy fun that Harrison Ford injected into the originals he fell far, far short.

The Jedi thing was mysterious and mystical in the first set of movies but Han provided the counterpoint - “Hokey religions and ancient weapons are no match for a good blaster at your side, kid”.

I watched the first few minutes of Serenity online the other day and I was thinking - THAT is what the original Star Wars movies were like, they were, ummmmm, oh yea, fun. The last three, not so much.

  • I think that all religious fundamentalism is dangerous.
  • I think Nick Cave never got his due.
  • I think women with curves are sexier than thin girls.
  • I think that Disney has too much power over U.S. copyright laws.

Hurra Torpedo

Hurra Torpedo - Total Eclipse of the heartOkay, the ninja started this by sending me this video of Duplex Records recording artists Hurra Torpedo ( and by telling me that tdb is stale… ) and I quickly became a little obsessed

Just what is the deal with these guys, their tribute to Bonny Tyler, their apparent dislike of kitchen appliances, and affinity for man ass?

The reaction from viewers of this are generally negative - but I have to say that it is as good as most performance art, and funnier then most sitcom television. I know that neither is saying much, but worth saying nonetheless.

I can’t read Norwegian but it looks like this video was made in 1993, which would mean that it is quite possibly seminal and at the least ahead of its time. Word on the street is that this performance was recorded for a show called “litle saturday”.

I am not sure I “like” it, (Tamara did) but I did watch it multiple times.
